about

A song that came out of the painting 'The Orrery' by Joseph Wright of Derby. It began with that single first line - when first I came to Derby I was hungry - which came out of nowhere, complete, while standing in front of the picture.

lyrics

When first I came to Derby I was hungry, I was hungry
Nothing in my belly since I left the coast of France
The citizens of Derby, well they fed me and they clothed me
Their kindness was the refuge that gave my life a chance

When first I came to Derby I was homeless, I was homeless
My country burned away like a paper in the flame
The armies that destroyed it shot my family, shot my family
And told the world outside that they did it in my name

When first I came to Derby I was nameless, I was nameless
The name my mother gave me left behind me in the sea
At first they called me nothing, I was voiceless, I was voiceless
So someone chose a name for me: my name was Refugee

When first I came to Derby I was broken, I was broken
They set me on my feet: their goodness mended me
Now voices from the shadows whisper lies to make them hate me
Whatever they may call me I still am Refugee
