about

Lovely traditional-sounding song from Emily Smith. We can't manage the accent, sorry, Emily. An unusual folk song in that it's cheerful, positive and everything seems to going pretty well. No deaths, no cruel sisters, nothing.

lyrics

CHORUS:

Will you go to town my Billy oh will you go to town?
When the sun shines high in the sky, my Billy,
and there’s laughter all around.
Come feein’ day, we’ll lead the way,
for a new home we are bound.
We’ll pack our bags and leave the rags,
when we go town.

For six months now you’ve steered the plough and worked your pair all day
Through rain and wind I saw you grin and smile at me that way,
but as the seasons move around the clouds will blow away
and out again will come the sun to warm us on our way.

CHORUS

I rise at five to milk the kye in the dairy I have been
and the fairest pleasures of this world I have seldom seen,
but now that I’ve an honest lad to make the days pass by,
oh, I cannae stay an’ bide alone when you bid me goodbye.

CHORUS

It’s long my lad you’ve loved me well and held me in your care
As we worked hard the summer long by Campbell’s banks so fair
It’s there you gave your word to me, between the dusk and dawn,
that when the gowan leaves had turned we’d be moving on.

CHORUS

So side by side, we’ll bid farewell to what was our first home.
We’ve served our time a full term long now we’ll take the road again
New lodgings we do seek my boy and who knows where they’ll be?
So up ye rise, put on your coat an’ take the road with me
